Library announces construction grant

The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) has announced construction grant awards to libraries across the state, including Westborough. There were 33 applicants, of which nine were awarded provisional grants. The remaining projects were placed on a waiting list. Westborough was placed at #11 on the waiting list.

Funding will be provided to libraries on the waiting list as it becomes available through either an existing bond bill or future bond authorizations.

“We couldn’t be happier about the grant,” said Westborough Public Library Director Maureen Ambrosino. “Being placed on the waitlist means that we’re one step closer to being able to provide the town with a library that will meet its needs for decades to come.”

There are a number of factors that determine when a project on the waiting list is funded. Projects may move up on the list if a community that was offered a grant isn’t able to secure local matching funds, or if a new bond authorization is approved by the state legislature.  Funding for this grant round is part of the general governmental needs bond bill filed in March, 2013 which included $150 million for the Massachusetts Public Library Construction Program.

Westborough will receive $9.4 million toward its proposed $21 million renovation/expansion project under the grant program.
