Transfer Station Information

Transfer station stickers covering the time period of July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2024 are now on sale. Town Hall is open to the public on the following days and times (PDF). Transfer station stickers can also be purchased online (see below), by mail, or by dropping off payment in the black mailbox outside of Town Hall labeled "Town Bills Only" (34 West Main Street). Once processed, stickers will be mailed out to residents.

The Town of Westborough does not provide public curbside trash and recycling pickup. A recycling and trash disposal drop-off facility is provided for the town under contract with EL. Harvey and Sons (68 Hopkinton Road - Route 135).

All vehicles that use the facility are required to display a dump sticker, a recycling sticker, or a paper pass. Proof of residency must be provided to obtain a sticker or a pass. Dump stickers can be purchased at the Westborough Board of Health or online.

Free recycling stickers are available for residents that wish to recycle only and can also be used to bring food waste to the Transfer Station for composting as well. Recycling stickers can be picked up at the Board of Health office during normal business hours. View information on what can and cannot be recycled at the Transfer Station (PDF).

One-day and one-month passes to the transfer station are available for residents who need to use the facility for a short time period. A one-day pass is $15 and a one-month pass is $20. Residents are limited to 3 passes a year. Passes can be purchased at the Board of Health office during normal business hours. We take cash and checks for payment. Please note: As of July 1, 2023, the one-day pass cost will be $15 and we will offer a one-month pass for $20 and a two-month pass for $40.

Please be advised that the yard waste disposal area for Westborough residents using the transfer station has been moved to E L. Harvey's Hopkinton site (394 Wood Street). This is a permanent location for the yard waste disposal area. Food waste should be brought to the main Transfer Station area in Westborough.

Dump sticker costs for through June 30, 2024  are $85 for the 1st sticker and $42.50 for the 2nd sticker. Senior stickers (65 years of age or older) are half-price. View Rules and Regulations (PDF) for the facility.

The hours for the Transfer Station are:

  • Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm
  • Saturdays 8 am to 2:45 pm
  • The facility is closed on Sunday

Private curbside collection service is available to residents who do not wish to purchase a dump sticker for the drop-off facility.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

The Board of Health typically holds one household hazardous waste disposal day per year in the fall. Information about the event will be provided as the event date nears.

Residents that cannot wait for the annual disposal day in the fall can bring their waste to New England Disposal Technologies. View information on their household hazardous waste collection service.

Waste oil and antifreeze may be taken to the DPW facility at 131 Oak Street for disposal throughout the year. Hours are Monday through Friday 7 am to 3 pm Please see an attendant in the garage before disposal.

Elemental mercury, unbroken thermometers, and thermostats may be brought to the Board of Health office. Fluorescent lamps may be brought to the transfer station (recycling or transfer station sticker required).

Latex paint can be disposed of as trash if dry. To dry small amounts, remove lid and let the paint dry in the can. For larger amounts, mix in kitty litter or pour one-inch layers of paint into a cardboard box lined with a plastic bag. Stir the paint occasionally to speed drying.

For further information, The Department of Environmental Protection (Mass DEP) has a guide on how to safely handle, recycle, and dispose of household hazardous products.

Food Composting Information

Westborough threw out 2367 pounds of waste per household in 2018, 2 to 3x more than our neighbors. Composting is an easy way to reduce this number since the U.S. Department of Environmental Protection estimates that 24% of waste is organic material that can be composted.

The Town of Westborough now offers food composting at the Transfer Station for anyone who has a Transfer Station sticker. Recycle stickers continue to be free and these stickers allow residents to bring their recycling and food waste to the Transfer Station.  View guidelines on what food waste can be handled at the Transfer Station. Waste can be brought in paper bags but please note that it cannot be brought in bio bags since the bio bags are not fully broken down by the company that is handling our food waste

For those who prefer a curbside option, the Town has also partnered with Black Earth Compost to offer curbside food waste collection services that will turn your food scraps back into dirt that can grow more food instead of being tossed as trash.

You'd be surprised how much of your waste you can actually compost with curbside collection. Unlike your backyard pile, on a curbside program, you can include bones, pizza boxes, compostable takeout containers, meat, cheese, lobster shells, your dog's hair, and almost everything that was alive!

The Black Earth service currently costs $99 for six months and once we get to 300 Westborough families, the price will be lowered to $69. At sign-up, you will be required to purchase a starter kit. This is currently $34 and includes a 13-gallon curbside bin and two sizes of compostable liners.
