Greg Montalbano Committee
Fundraiser to Dedicate Town Ball Fields
The Westborough Recreation Department recently received approval from their Board of Selectmen to form a committee to honor town resident Greg Montalbano. Greg passed away in August 2009 after a 13 year courageous battle with testicular cancer.
The committee includes: Pat Fallon, John Lusek, Brandi Phillips, Earl Storey, Matt Storey and Frank DeSiata. Their goals are to rename the town ball fields at Upton Road after Greg and also to honor him with the placement of a new sign and memorial plaque dedicating the fields.
Greg grew up in Westborough with his mom, Sharon, dad, Andy, and sister, Kristen. He was a great all American kid, but his notoriety came as a baseball player. He got his start in Westborough Little League at the same Upton Road ball fields to be renamed for him. In college, he was a star pitcher for Northeastern University. Here, also, he was first diagnosed with testicular cancer. Through all the adversity and surgeries he bravely continued his successful ways. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox and was named their Minor League Pitcher of the year in 2001. More surgeries derailed his potential major league career. However, Greg persevered! His passion for life and the game he loved never stopped. He finished his pitching career with the Worcester Tornadoes. All the while he was receiving treatments, but he never complained to
anyone, he just worked even harder. Greg always put others needs before his own. He spoke to young men about the necessity to check for testicular cancer, he coached young athletes and he was a wonderful spokesperson for the Boston Red Sox & the Jimmy Fund—while working a full time job and playing baseball. Greg was a wonderful person and role model to so many. We, as a committee, are honored to be able to do something for a young man who touched the lives of so many others. While his life was tragically cut far too short, we hope his memory will live on forever on the ball fields to be renamed for him—his first “home fields”.
As mentioned, the committee is hoping to raise enough money for a sign and to build a memorial at the fields to honor Greg. Anyone who would like to make a tax-deductible donation is asked to send a check payable to the Westborough Recreation Department to:
Westborough Recreation Department
34 West Main St. Town Hall
Westborough, MA 01581
Should all go according to plan, the committee hopes to dedicate the field sometime in late June, 2010.
